The Town Council had previously updated the public that the project to build a new community hub, within Broomfield Park, was being reassessed to investigate the potential for the building to be constructed using modular building techniques.
The funders for this project, the Youth Investment Fund (YIF), met to consider whether they would continue to financially support this option. Unfortunately, we found out yesterday, they have taken the decision to withdraw their offer of funding. The funding criteria for YIF had a very strict deadline that any building needed to be in place by March 2025. In this situation they felt that the risk to this deadline was too great, and they could no longer offer support, despite the modular building companies confirming they could meet this deadline.
This is devastating, outrageous and unacceptable given the need for this facility and the time and investment that had gone into getting this project to the point where planning consent had been granted.
The Town Council will now be meeting again, on 15 February 2024 at 7.00pm, to formulate a strategy for the building going forward and assess how this will impact on service users. Residents, as always, are welcome to attend the council meeting.
Residents please be assured that the Town Council will be challenging this decision.
